Te amo Tulum

So as most of you watch my youtube channel, you will know I recently got back from my  holiday to Mexico. What most of you won't know, is I've been desperate to go to Mexico since I was fourteen- when I went on a cruise round the caribbean and met a boy called Pablo from Guadalajara. It was love at first sight! Although, as you can probably guess, it didn't last all too long. However the desire to go to Mexico stayed with me, mostly for my love of chilli and nachos though, to be honest.

But Mexico truly didn't disappoint. I travelled to Tulum, about an hour from Cancun, and only since have heard that it's apparently the "place to go" this year. And honestly, I completely see why. Aside from the beautiful Caribbean beaches and seas, which SO unfortunately were actually spoilt for us, (they had a freak wave of golden seaweed that happens for a few weeks once every ten years- lucky us!) the gorgeous hotels, and the beyond spectacular weather (with the odd tropical rainstorm), the place is overflowing with history and naturally occurring spectacle wonders. Tulum is home to the Mayan's, and I won't delve into a history lesson with you as I know that's not why you're here, but if you're at all interested you have to google or wikipedia Tulum and the Mayan's, as it's absolutely fascinating. 

A few of my holiday highlights were firstly, swimming with dolphins. It's something I've wanted to do ever since I can remember! I had my reservations, as I don't believe in the captivity of wild animals, however I just couldn't pass up on the once in a lifetime (for me, in England!) chance to meet a dolphin face to face, but I have to say I was so pleasantly surprised. It wasn't at all like the documentaries I've seen. The enclosure was an actual part of the sea, which had been sectioned off by massive rocks, with a netted passage letting water flow through. Therefore the whole enclosure was brimming with fish, of all shapes and sizes, so that quashed the rumour that the dolphins only do tricks because they are starving and can only get food from the trainers. In fact, when we fed the dolphins, they actually kept the fish in their mouth for ages and didn't swallow it because they weren't even hungry! The only negative, is admittedly they obviously don't have as much space to swim as they deserve and would have in the wild. But the centre has a program going to open up the barrier and build another barrier further out to sea, so they have more freedom, but can't swim away forever! Also, and take this how you will because I know there will be mixed opinions on this, all of the dolphins except around two or three of the eldest, were born there. As one of the oldest dolphin centres, they have been there for twenty five years, and the dolphins are all one big family. So not only have they not been torn from the wild and from their mothers, but they are actually swimming and playing with their mothers, grandmothers, brothers and sisters. It was such a lovely atmosphere, and you could plainly see that the trainers were in absolute love with the dolphins. Because really, how could you not be?! The experience gave me so much more respect for them, they really are incredible, intelligent, beautiful creatures and it was an absolute honour to meet them. 

Another highlight was swimming in one of Tulum's hundreds of underwater caves, or "cenotes". Seriously, google image "cenote" right now, it takes two seconds. See what I mean? WOW. What a surreal, magical, if not slightly frightening, experience. It was almost pitch black except for areas that had been lit, and the water was ice cold and crystal clear as if you'd just poured it out of an Evian bottle. It was like something out of a film. 

I had an amazing time, and Tulum is one hundred percent a place I have to go back to and explore more! For now, here's some of my holiday photos, enjoy, and I'll speak to you soon.
